Oppn criticises rejection of notices for removal of CEC
New Delhi, April 9 -- Leaders of at least six Opposition parties, including the Congress and Trinamool Congress, on Wednesday criticised the rejection of the notices for moving a motion in Parliament to remove Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar from his post, and indicated all options were open to challenge the decision by the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha presiding officers.
Senior Congress lawmaker Abhishek Singhvi alleged the decision undermines constitutional processes and weakens accountability in a democracy. Addressing a press conference, he claimed that such rejection at a preliminary stage amounted to "strangulating" the entire impeachment mechanism envisaged in the Constitution.
