India, Feb. 27 -- Kolkata was shaken by a massive earthquake on Friday afternoon, with residents reporting tremors across the city around 1:22 pm. The magnitude of the quake was 5.5, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
Meanwhile, US Geological Survey (USGS) registered a magnitude of 5.3. The USGS confirmed the epicenter was 26 km southeast of Taki in West Bengal. The tremor struck at 1:22 pm IST at a shallow depth of 9.8 km, at coordinates 22.451degN and 89.139degE, which likely contributed to the intensity of shaking felt in Kolkata and nearby areas.
Authorities have yet to confirm any damage or casualties.
