India's ethanol capacity outstrips current demand
New Delhi, Aug. 7 -- India's current ethanol distillation capacity is 2,019 crore litre per annum, almost double the approximately 1,040 crore litres of ethanol supplied to state-run oil marketing companies (OMCs) in the ethanol supply year (ESY) of 2024-25 (November 1, 2024 to October 31, 2025), according to government data.
According to the latest official data submitted by minister of state for petroleum Suresh Gopi in Parliament on August 3, the country currently has 478 ethanol manufacturing units across 22 states.
"Till year 2014, ethanol distillation capacity of molasses-based distilleries was less than 200 crore litres. Supply of ethanol to OMCs was only 38 crore litres with blending levels of only 1.53% in ESY 2013-14," a December ...
