Cess, surcharge share in taxes falls
New Delhi, July 27 -- Surcharges and cesses together contributed Rs.6,69,620 crore in 2025-26, accounting for about 16.4% of Rs.40,77,772 crore gross tax revenue (GTR) collected that year compared with Rs.6,80,578 crore in 2024-25, which was 17.9% of Rs.37,96,382 crore GTR in FY25, according to government data.
Combined revenue from cesses and surcharges are estimated to decline to Rs.6,30,350 crore in the current financial year, mainly because of a sharp year-on-year fall in expected cesses collections, according to the finance ministry's data submitted to the Parliament on July 20. These levies are projected to account for about 14.3% of Rs.44,04,086 crore gross tax revenue (GTR) as per the budget estimates (BE) of 2026-27.
