Anti-crime laws come into force in Bengal
Kolkata, July 14 -- West Bengal's two anti-crime laws, that were recently passed by the state legislative assembly, came into force on Monday, officials aware of the development said.
The West Bengal Public Safety and Control of Anti-social Activities Bill, 2026, often dubbed the Goonda Bill, and the West Bengal Maintenance of Public Order (Amendment) Bill, 2026-laws that empower the police with sweeping powers including preventive detention for up to 12 months without trial and confiscation of offenders' property-were passed by the state assembly in June this year and received the Governor's assent on Friday.
