Kolkata, May 22 -- The Calcutta high court granted protection from coercive police action to Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee until July 31 in a case over a speech he made after poll results were declared. However, the court told him to appear in person before the investigating officers and prohibited him from leaving the country without the court's permission, lawyers said.
The Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate registered an FIR on May 15 under four sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and two sections of the Representation of the People Act.
Banerjee sought to appear virtually before the police but the court denied the request. The case will be heard on July 20.
