New Delhi, May 15 -- Bilateral trade between India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been broad-based and not driven solely by gold imports, the commerce and industry ministry said on Thursday, while clarifying that concessional-duty gold imports under the India-UAE free trade agreement are capped by quotas and have remained below permitted levels. The clarification came days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to conserve foreign exchange by avoiding non-essential foreign travel and refraining from buying gold for a year amid mounting pressure on India's forex reserves due to the global energy crisis.
