India, Oct. 12 -- Microsoft plans to scale its in-house Maia artificial intelligence (AI) accelerator family to multi-gigawatt deployments from 2027, aiming to make the chips its primary inference system for its products and services as demand for AI computing grows.

The company is also introducing Maia 300, a next-generation AI accelerator that Microsoft claims will deliver 40% more tokens per watt than leading graphics processing unit (GPU)-based systems. The expansion marks a significant step in Microsoft's efforts to develop its own silicon and improve the efficiency of the infrastructure powering its AI services.
