India, Aug. 2 -- The European Commission says a new phase of the European Union's Artificial Intelligence Act starts to apply on 2 August 2026, bringing additional transparency obligations for providers and deployers of certain artificial intelligence systems.

The development marks another milestone in the rollout of the AI Act, formally Regulation (EU) 2024/1689, which the Commission describes as the world's first comprehensive legal framework for artificial intelligence (AI). While the regulation entered into force on 1 August 2024, its obligations are being applied in stages, depending on the type and risk level of the AI system involved.
