Punjab declines parole for Amritpal Singh citing security risks Chandigarh, Nov 27 (UNI) The Punjab government has refused to grant temporary parole to Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh, who had sought permission to attend the Winter Session of Parliament. The decision was taken based on a district-level security assessment submitted by the administration. Amritpal Singh, detained under the National Security Act (NSA) since March 2023, is lodged in Dibrugarh Jail, Assam. He had moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court, seeking parole for parliamentary participation. The High Court then directed the state government to decide on the request within a week. The winter session is scheduled from December 1 to 19. According to sources, reports from the Amritsar Deputy Commissioner and police officials warned that releasing Amritpal, even briefly, could trigger law-and-order disturbances. The state informed the court that the risk assessment made his release untenable. During earlier hearings, his counsel argued that NSA provisions allow parole under special circumstances and asserted that his client represents nearly four lakh voters. Government representatives, however, maintained that only the competent authority can permit a detainee's presence in Parliament. The High Court is now expected to review the government's decision in the coming days. UNI NB
