Bangladesh, Sept. 14 -- When fighting erupted in Khartoum in April 2023 between Sudan's Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), it was initially viewed as another devastating but largely contained African civil war. The violence was horrific, the humanitarian consequences were immense, and neighboring countries faced enormous pressure from refugees and instability. But the conflict itself remained, for the most part, inside Sudan's borders.

That distinction is rapidly disappearing.
