Malaysias Myanmar returns expose the dangerous illusion of voluntary repatriation
Bangladesh, Oct. 9 -- When refugees choose between detention, destitution and returning to a conflict zone, calling their departure “voluntary” may conceal a troubling reality: consent means little when meaningful alternatives are absent.
The recent return of 1,476 Myanmar nationals from Malaysia has reopened a difficult debate over refugee protection, state sovereignty and the meaning of voluntary repatriation. Malaysian authorities describe the departures as voluntary.
