Bangladesh, Sept. 23 -- For decades, studying in China has been presented as one of the most effective ways for Americans to understand the country. Learning Mandarin, living alongside Chinese citizens, experiencing local culture, and developing personal relationships can undoubtedly provide insights that are difficult to obtain from afar. Yet in an era of increasingly sophisticated surveillance, political controls, and restrictions on information, an important question deserves greater attention: What kind of understanding does the United States actually need?
