Amnesty report details Moroccos long-running spyware campaign against civil society
Bangladesh, Oct. 2 -- Amnesty International has published a new report alleging that Moroccan authorities have spent years using sophisticated spyware and other digital surveillance technologies to monitor human rights defenders, journalists, activists and political figures, despite repeated government denials.
The report, titled “We start with the verdict”: Inside Moroccos surveillance machine, examines Moroccos use of surveillance technology over roughly two decades. It places particular emphasis on the deployment of Pegasus, the powerful spyware developed by Israeli technology company NSO Group, which Amnesty says was used against members of civil society between 2017 and 2021 and may have remained in use afterward.
