Gangtok, Sept. 2 -- The Sikkim government has intensified scientific assessment, monitoring and mitigation planning for potentially dangerous glacial lakes, with 40 high-risk lakes identified across the state and detailed studies completed for 13 of the 16 lakes considered among the most critical.

Principal Secretary of the Science and Technology Department, Sandeep Tambe, outlined the state's progress in tackling Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) risks, describing the emerging glacial hazard as a growing challenge linked to climate change.
