WhatsApp expands security with new authentication measures
India, Aug. 27 -- WhatsApp is expanding its account security framework with stronger two-step verification, support for multiple passkeys and additional context for calls from unknown numbers. The measures form part of Meta-owned WhatsApp's broader effort to strengthen account protection and address increasingly sophisticated phishing, account takeover and social-engineering threats.
The company announced the measures on 25 August 2026, positioning the changes as additional layers of protection for accounts and communications.
WhatsApp is upgrading its two-step verification mechanism, which provides an additional layer of protection against account takeover even if an attacker obtains a user's one-time passcode.
