India, April 9 -- Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has initiated stakeholder consultations by releasing a paper outlining a proposed framework for authorising satellite communication networks and assigning spectrum to such providers. The move follows a reference from the Department of Telecommunications under the Telecommunications Act, 2023, seeking recommendations on the terms, conditions and spectrum-related provisions for a new category of operators.

With the sector regulator examining how satellite systems can support connectivity, particularly in areas where terrestrial networks remain limited,satellite communication networks are likely to play a larger role in expanding telecom coverage across India.
