Social media grievances leave nearly 50K appeals pending in India
India, Oct. 1 -- Nearly 50,000 appeals against social media platform decisions were pending before India's Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC), as new filings increasingly outpace disposals.
The backlog had risen sharply from 174 pending appeals in November 2025 to 49,978 as of 22 September 2026, according to government dashboard data analysed by digital rights organisation Software Freedom Law Center, India (SFLC.in).
Overall, the GAC had received a cumulative 63,353 appeals and disposed of 13,375. Between November 2025 and September 2026 alone, 57,364 new appeals were filed, against 7,560 disposals.
