India, Aug. 31 -- India has moved into the next phase of its semiconductor strategy with the government approving Semicon 2.0, a Rs 1,27,500 crore programme aimed at expanding capabilities beyond chip fabrication and packaging to include design, semiconductor equipment and materials, research and development, and talent development.

The programme builds on the first Semicon India Programme, which was approved with a Rs 76,000 crore outlay. As of July 2026, 12 semiconductor manufacturing projects had been approved across six states, involving committed investments of more than Rs 1.64 lakh crore. Three of these projects have already started commercial production.
