India, April 30 -- India's online gaming market expanded at breakneck speed in recent years, fuelled by widespread digital access, a young user base, and sustained investor interest. The ecosystem rapidly grew to an estimated USD 3.7 billion in FY24. However, that momentum came to a sharp close in August 2025 when systemic issues over regulatory uncertainty, user safety and financial risk emerged.

To address these fault lines, the government has decided to implement the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Rules, 2026, from 1 May 2026, representing a strong intervention.
