India, March 13 -- The Centre has approved 104 research projects worth Rs 271 crore aimed at developing indigenous 6G technology, which is expected to succeed current 5G networks.The funding was confirmed by Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha on 12 March 2026.
The projects are being supported through the Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF) and are intended to reduce India's dependence on imported telecom equipment. If the research leads to successful deployment, 6G networks could deliver significantly higher internet speeds, near-instant response times and enable new applications across sectors such as smart cities, manufacturing and healthcare over the next decade.
