India, April 16 -- Amazon has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Globalstar, a move aimed at strengthening its low Earth orbit satellite initiative, Amazon Leo. The deal is expected to enable direct-to-device (D2D) services, allowing compatible devices to connect directly to satellites and extending coverage beyond areas served by terrestrial networks.
As part of the development, Amazon Leo will also support satellite-based features for Apple devices, including iPhones and Apple Watch models. These services build on existing capabilities such as emergency messaging and location sharing, which have relied on satellite connectivity in areas without mobile coverage.
