Hanoi, April 2 -- The Philippines, heavily dependent on imported energy, said on April 1 that it had held direct talks with Iran to request the establishment of a safe corridor for oil tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

Manila asked Tehran to recognise the Philippines as a "non-hostile country", allowing Philippine-flagged vessels and oil shipments to pass safely through the strategic waterway.

The move came as the Philippines has declared an energy emergency following record-high fuel prices./.
