Myanmar deactivates more than 140,000 phone SIM cards linked to online gambling
Hanoi, June 23 -- Myanmar authorities have permanently deactivated 143,409 phone SIM cards suspected of being connected to online gambling activities, officials said on June 22. The SIM cards were permanently disabled between March 2025 and May 2026 after authorities found they had been used to distribute large volumes of identical messages promoting online gambling. Local authorities suspended 1,120 SIM cards used to operate illegal financial accounts linked to gambling activities, while permanently shutting down more than 1,000 e-wallet accounts associated with online gambling networks.
