ALEXANDRIA, Va., July 21 -- United States Patent no. PP37,526, issued on July 21, was assigned to Walters Gardens Inc. (Zeeland, Mich.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A new and distinct Hosta plant named 'Gold Medal' producing small-sized, low, rounded mounds of basal, nearly rounded leaves with mucronulate apices. The bases are cordate with lobes divergent and not meeting. The leaves begin chartreuse in the spring and become a bright yellow with sufficient sunlight as the season progresses.
