ALEXANDRIA, Va., July 15 -- United States Patent no. 12,662,441, issued on June 23, was assigned to University of Kansas (Lawrence, Kan.).

"Activation of alkyl substrates in condensed phase with ozone" was invented by Bala Subramaniam (Lawrence, Kan.), Hongda Zhu (Lawrence, Kan.) and Timothy A. Jackson (Lawrence, Kan.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A process for oxidizing an alkyl substrate may comprise combining an alkyl substrate (e.g., propane, n-butane) and ozone in a liquid phase medium comprising a branched alkane activator (e.g., isobutane) and a protic additive (e.g., water) under conditions sufficient to oxidize the alkyl substrate to products.
