ALEXANDRIA, Va., Feb. 24 -- United States Patent no. 12,559,647, issued on Feb. 24, was assigned to Tough By Nature LLC (Mt. Gilead, N.C.).

"Wood with strengthening coating" was invented by Robert B. Jordan IV (Mount Gilead, N.C.), Ryan Hilsinger (Climax, N.C.) and Ivan Hurlburt (Houston).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "An enhanced wood product includes a wooden board or plank having a length and at least three sides, the sides defining a polygonal cross section along the length of the wooden board or plank. A polyurethane-urea coating on at least two of the sides very substantially increases the strength of the wood product and various products made with coated wood."
