ALEXANDRIA, Va., July 16 -- United States Patent no. PP37,501, issued on June 30, was assigned to Spring Meadow Nursery Inc. (Grand Haven, Mich.).

"Buddleia plant named 'SMNBDMO'" was invented by Megan M. Mathey (Holland, Mich.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A new and distinct cultivar of Buddleia plant named 'SMNBDMO' is disclosed, characterized by large conical inflorescences of fragrant, dark royal purple flowers with burnt orange throats. Plants have well-branched, tidy habits, and excellent flower coverage. The new cultivar is a Buddleia, typically produced as an outdoor ornamental plant."
