ALEXANDRIA, Va., July 15 -- United States Patent no. 12,661,334, issued on June 23, was assigned to Societe des Produits Nestle S.A. (Vevey, Switzerland).

"Dietary butyrate and its uses" was invented by Amaury Patin (Lausanne, Switzerland), Elizabeth Forbes-Blom (Epalinges, Switzerland) and Sameer Kulkarni (Copenhagen, Denmark).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "Use of a compound having the formula (1), (2), (3) or (4), or combinations thereof, for providing a source of butyrate with improved organoleptic properties wherein R1, R2, R3, R4, R5 and R6 are independently a long chain fatty acid having between 16 and 20 carbons the prevention and/or treatment of non alcoholic fatty liver disease."
