According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "The precursor ion is reacted with ammonia molecules or ammonia radicals to generate product ions, the product ions are separated according to a mass-to-charge ratio, and detected. It is estimated that whether or not an aldehyde group is included in a molecular structure of the precursor ion based on a difference between a mass-to-charge ratio of one of the detected product ion and a mass-to-charge ratio of the precursor ion.
