ALEXANDRIA, Va., July 21 -- United States Patent no. 12,685,741, issued on July 21, was assigned to LifeScience AS (Orsta, Norway).

"N-acetylneuraminic acid compositions and methods of use" was invented by Jan Remmereit (Hovdebygda, Norway) and Hogne Vik (Oslo, Norway).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "The present invention relates to the field of viral disorders, and in particular to the use of natural compounds to inhibit viruses and viral infection. Compositions comprising NANA are provided for treating or preventing viral infections, such as those causing the common cold."
