ALEXANDRIA, Va., July 7 -- United States Patent no. 12,674,933, issued on July 7, was assigned to Intel Corp. (Santa Clara, Calif.).

"Low-loss waveguide with undercut" was invented by Harel Frish (Albuquerque, N.M.), John M. Heck (Berkeley, Calif.), Duanni Huang (San Jose, Calif.), Hari Mahalingam (San Jose, Calif.) and Haisheng Rong (Pleasanton, Calif.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "An apparatus comprising a substrate; a waveguide above the substrate; and an undercut into the substrate, the undercut beneath at least a portion of the waveguide, wherein a magnitude of a maximum length of the undercut is lower than a magnitude of a maximum depth of the undercut."
