"Electronic gaming machine having transmissive reels with reel strips that provide space symbols for image displays" was invented by Scott Jones (Reno, Nev.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A gaming system including a housing and a reel assembly including rotatable reel having a reel strip including a space symbol having an image space area and a graphic area, and a transmissive display device defining a see-through window aligned with the rotatable reel and configured to display an image in the window aligned with the image space area of the space symbol of the reel strip."
