US Patent Issued to FUJI OIL on Sept. 22 for "High-stearic acid sunflower seed" (Japanese Inventors)

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Sept. 24 -- United States Patent no. 12,740,524, issued on Sept. 22, was assigned to FUJI OIL Co. LTD. (Izumisano, Japan).

"High-stearic acid sunflower seed" was invented by Hirohisa Saga (Tsukubamirai, Japan) and Masaharu Kato (Tsukubamirai, Japan).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "The problem solved by the present invention is to provide a high-stearic acid sunflower line. This problem is solved by a sunflower seed comprising a sequence insertion mutation on the 3' side from the TATA box and on the 5' side from the start codon of a stearoyl-acyl carrier protein desaturase 17 (SAD17) gene."
