ALEXANDRIA, Va., March 3 -- United States Patent no. 12,566,136, issued on March 3, was assigned to De Beers UK Ltd (London).

"Determination of a gemstone's composition" was invented by Peter Lanigan (Berkshire, Great Britain) and Colin McGuinness (London).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A method of determining the composition of a polished gemstone includes passing an excitation beam through the gemstone from a table facet substantially to a culet of the gemstone, an axis of the excitation beam being substantially perpendicular to the table facet; and capturing luminescence emitted by the gemstone from an angle oblique to the axis of the excitation beam."
