ALEXANDRIA, Va., July 14 -- United States Patent no. 12,682,221, issued on July 14, was assigned to Altera Corp. (San Jose, Calif.).

"Techniques for increasing activation sparsity in artificial neural networks" was invented by Nihat Tunali (San Jose, Calif.), Arnab Raha (San Jose, Calif.), Bogdan Pasca (Toulouse, France), Martin Langhammer (Salisbury, Great Britain), Michael Wu (Belmont, Calif.) and Deepak Mathaikutty (Chandler, Ariz.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A method for implementing an artificial neural network in a computing system that comprises performing a compute operation using an input activation and a weight to generate an output activation, and modifying the output activation...
