ALEXANDRIA, Va., Sept. 30 -- United States Patent no. 12,746,112, issued on Sept. 29, was assigned to Alcon Inc. (Fribourg, Switzerland).

"Method and apparatus for adhering a capsular bag to an intraocular lens" was invented by Michael Lee Mangum (Sunnyvale, Calif.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A method for performing an ophthalmic procedure on an eye, the eye having a capsular bag in which an intraocular lens (IOL) has been implanted, includes applying energy to a portion of the capsular bag. The applied energy is sufficient to melt the portion of the capsular bag without cauterization such that the portion of the capsular bag adheres to an adjacent portion of the IOL."
