ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 16 -- United States Patent no. 12,653,158, issued on June 16.

"Lionfish population reduction" was invented by Michael D. Wilson (Diamondhead, Miss.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "The population of lionfish in an environment is reduced by: (a) obtaining a male lionfish having a body with a urogenital opening; (b) attaching a channel to its body, the channel having an inlet at the urogenital opening and having an outlet spaced apart from the inlet; and (c) releasing the male lionfish into the environment."

The patent was filed on Jan. 18, 2026, under Application No. 19/452,334.
