BELVIDERE, N.J., Oct. 16 -- Warren County issued the following news release:
How the Scam Works
Caller ID Spoofing: Scammers manipulate caller ID to make calls look like they come directly from the Sheriff's Office number
Real Names Used: Fraudsters use the names of actual current or retired officers to sound believable.
Intimidating Tactics: Callers claim you have an outstanding arrest warrant, missed grand jury duty, unpaid taxes, or owe a court fee/fine.
Fake Documents: Some victims have received forged arrest warrants featuring court seals and names of deceased judges.
Demand for Money: They demand immediate payment via cash, wire transfer, prepaid gift cards, or cryptocurrency to avoid being arrested.
