PULLMAN, Wash., Aug. 10 -- Washington State University issued the following news release:
Bound for a youth basketball tournament in Carson City, Nevada in 2012, WSU cross country runner Ku Stevens and his family drove through the former campus of the Stewart Indian Boarding School.
"Your great-grandfather ran from here," Stevens' father told his then eight-year-old son. "It was a bad place."
In the years that followed, Stevens learned why his grandfather, Frank Quinn, ran 50 miles from the school to Yerington, the home of the Yerington Paiute Tribe across thousands of feet of elevation change.
