NHPR REPORTS ON UMAINE DISCOVERY THAT WOODCOCK CHARGE DEER TO DEFEND NESTS

ORONO, Maine, July 17 -- University of Maine issued the following news release:

New Hampshire Public Radio (NHPR) interviewed Kylie Brunette, University of Maine Ph.D. student in wildlife ecology, on revealing the first known evidence of American woodcock hens aggressively charging white-tailed deer to defend their nests. "Woodcock are not typically considered aggressive. They're just a funky little bird. You look them in the eye and there's maybe not that much going on upstairs," Brunette said. "They're internet famous and beloved because they do a funny little dance and they make a funny little sound."
