WASHINGTON, Aug. 24 -- The U.S. Navy issued the following news release:

Since its inception, Navy EOD has focused on permitting the fleet and joint force to retain initiative and maneuver wherever and however needed, undeterred by explosive threats. The early technicians defused and collected intelligence on live enemy ordnance, both on land and underwater, across the Pacific and European theaters ofWorld War II and the Korean War. They cleared harbors and rivers of mines and improvised waterborne threats, and took care of improvised explosive devices in the jungles of Vietnam, often under direct fire.
