The Jacksonville State University Police Department has added a new memberto its ranks,andOfficer Cody Quinn has added a new member to his family.Daphne, a 2-year-old yellow Labrador retriever, joined the department in July and is trained to detect firearms and explosives, particularly in large crowds.

Jax State hosts more than 300,000 visitors each year forspecial events. That figure does not include the university's approximately10,300 studentsand 1,200 faculty and staff-all of whombenefitfrom an added layer of protection,explained Jax StateChief of PoliceMichael Barton.
