LAFAYETTE, La., Aug. 3 -- The University of Louisiana at Lafayette issued the following news release:

Gas station plate lunches, Waffle House specials and Shipley's Do-Nuts are all on the menu of Get It While It's Hot, a new book of essays that explores the culture of eating by the side of the road in the U.S. South. Shelley Ingram, professor in the UL Lafayette Department of English, edited the compilation for LSU Press. She joined La Louisiane to discuss how she and her colleagues got the idea for the book (spoiler: it all started with fried chicken) and why these often overlooked foodways provide a window into the people and places that shape the South.
