The Internal Revenue Service today encouraged taxpayers who requested an extension to file their 2025 federal tax return as soon as possible, rather than waiting until the Oct. 15 deadline.
IRS Free File remains available through Oct. 15, 2026, and offers free guided tax preparation for taxpayers with an adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less in 2025. Taxpayers can prepare and e-file federal returns securely with IRS trusted partners at no cost.
