Forty-five years ago today, an early-morning terrorist attack on U.S. Air Forces in Europe Headquarters at Ramstein Air Base injured 14 people, damaged the headquarters building and fundamentally changed how the command approached installation security.
The Aug. 31, 1981, bombing came during a period of heightened terrorist activity across Europe. Throughout the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, extremist organizations carried out attacks against U.S. military personnel, facilities and interests for a variety of political aims.
