CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Oct. 9 -- The University of Virginia issued the following news release:

Stacey LeClair had no choice about whether she was going to college.

That doesn't mean she felt prepared for it.

"Thinking about that time, it was really scary. It was overwhelming," said LeClair, who is now working toward her doctorate in history at the University of Virginia.

LeClair grew up in a working-class neighborhood in Calgary, a city in the Canadian province of Alberta, where pursuing higher education wasn't the norm. But in her family, it was expected.

She would be a first-generation student when she started at the University of Calgary in 2011, and it was taken for granted she would stay close to home.
