BOISE, Idaho, Sept. 30 -- Boise State University issued the following news release:
FOX Weather interviewed Professor Brian Jackson about dust devils in September 2026, following public interested based on viral videos.
Jackson, who studies physics and astronomy at Boise State, researches dust devils here on Earth and on Mars. In 2024, he led a team of researchers who calculated wind speeds on Mars using data from the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter.
"We don't understand the details of how dust devils really work, but what we do understand is that the ground gets hot and that makes the air near the ground rise," Jackson said. "That updraft sucks air in from around the rising vortex."
