The U.S. Air Force is advancing point defense as a core function of air and space power, strengthening its ability to protect the Airmen, aircraft, infrastructure and other critical assets required to generate combat airpower.

Chief of Staff of the Air Force Gen. Ken Wilsbach announced two related initiatives during his Sept. 14 keynote address at the 2026 Air and Space Forces Association Air, Space & Cyber Conference: establishment of the Point Defense Weapon System and development of a dedicated career field for point defense Airmen.
