Tridib BaparnashNew Delhi, July 7 -- Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo's FIFA World Cup journey came to an emotional end on Monday as Portugal were knocked out by Spain in the Round of 16, with Mikel Merino's late winner sealing a 1-0 victory and ending the 41-year-old's hopes of finally lifting football's biggest prize.

While Ronaldo confirmed that the 2026 edition was his final FIFA World Cup, he stopped short of announcing his retirement from international football, insisting he would take time before making any decision on his future with Portugal.

Speaking after the defeat, the Portuguese captain admitted the result was difficult to accept but felt his side had done enough to compete.
